We went back to the orthopedic surgeon's office today for Avery's follow-up appointment. She got her leg x-rayed again and her fracture is all healed up, so she's back to normal. I feel like Avery is very happy to be done with her cast because it made her poor little foot so hot. If she's anything like her mother, she HATES hot feet, so I can understand how it would have been tough for her to endure. We're through it, though! That's the good news.
The appointment was not without incident, however... Unfortunately, Avery wasn't able to enjoy her foot freedom as soon as the cast was removed because she was screaming her head off. The tool that they used to cut the cast burned her down one side of her leg. I'm not happy about it. And that is as nice as I can be about the situation right now. Apparently, cast-saw burns are pretty uncommon but doctors are supposed to take extra precautions with patients that are unable to convey an issue, should one arise (i.e. a BABY or someone in surgery!). So it happened to us. What really got me was that the tech first tried to tell us that it was a pinched spot from being in the cast. Okay, no. Sorry, but I'm not stupid and I just saw where you sawed down her leg as she screamed. Then the doctor came in and was like "Oh yeah. That's a saw burn. Put some antibiotic ointment on it. She'll be fine." That was it. We got no "This happens sometimes and I'm sorry it happened to you." No "sorry we maimed your 9 month old." No "let's get you a bandaid." Nothing. And this guy is a pediatriac orthopedic surgeon. Kids in casts and anxious parents are supposed to be his speciality!
I go back and forth between being ticked, frustrated, and panicked about this situation. I'm trying hard to remember that, no matter how much I wish it never happened or worry about how it will heal, I can't change the past or control the future. I'm just really hoping that it heals without any further complications and that she doesn't have a scar. My sweet girl deserves a break!
In happier news, yesterday Avery was 9 months old. Here are a few pictures from our week.
Just because a girl is in a pink cast is no excuse to sacrifice her hygiene!
We don't nap in the swing anymore, but we had to make
an exception since she's so comfortable there
Happy 9 months!
Excited to get her cast off! Little did we know...
One last photo with her pink cast!
Here is Avery's burn. This picture doesn't do it much justice but I couldn't get a better one.
